If you ask any successful entrepreneur what the key to their success was, they’ll always talk about their mindset.
And they’ll probably say it was far more important than what they actually did.
The reason is simple: there are about 36 millionaires in the world today, who have built their businesses in every industry imaginable.
Think of it this way:
If you’re starting at Point A, which is where you are today…
And you want to get to Point B, which is your definition of success…
There are infinite ways to get there.
However, there are definite and proven guiding principles for getting there the fastest and avoiding major roadblocks. This is where your mindset comes in.
In the meantime, here are my 7 big tips for getting started today.
Tip #1: Get Out There.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”
– Michael Jordan
Not sure if your idea will work? START.
Unsure about what to do? Brainstorm some ideas, pick one, and START.
Have an amazing product or service, but wondering if people will like it? GET OUT THERE.
It’s all about taking baby steps. Place one foot in front of the other, and start putting yourself out there.
Sure, it’ll be uncomfortable. Probably really uncomfortable.
But is it worse than the idea of being in the exact same spot you are today… 1 year from now?
How about 5 years from now?
You’ve got this, and whatever you’re working on is probably better in other people’s eyes than you think it is. So go ahead. Get started, and put yourself out there.
Tip #2: Find a Coach Who Has Done What You Want To Do.
One of the most powerful ideas that has helped me the most in building a successful business is simple:
Find someone who is doing and getting what you want to do and get…
And simply model them.
It’s the easiest way to accelerate your learning curve and sail smoothly past the common challenges.
The alternative is the “school of hard knocks”, which everyone has to go through to some degree. It’s up to you how hard or easy your journey needs to be.
Tip #3: Fail Fast, Fail Forward
“I’ve come to believe that all my past failure and frustration were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy.”
– Tony Robbins
How much do you learn when you win?
Well, you certainly get a boost of confidence.
But when it comes to learning, most successful entrepreneurs will tell you that they’ve learned more from their failures than their successes.
In the startup community, there’s a lot of talk about failing forward. Meaning take action, be decisive… and don’t be afraid to make a mess.
You’re going to make mistakes no matter what you do. So the faster you make them and answer the big questions about “how to succeed”, the better.
Tip #4: Learn Daily
“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”
– Henry Ford
A lot of CEOs I know will read a new book every week or two.
Personally, I love watching videos. I’m continually seeking out new information from people I know, people I model, and people are who are doing great things in any industry.
I’m a huge sports fan (especially basketball), and I find there’s so much to learn from top athletes.
Are you learning and growing every day?
Tip #5: Create Daily
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”
– Walt Disney
Let’s say you’re an uber driver, and you want to start your own business on the side.
Outside of work, your family, and taking care of your basic human needs like sleeping and eating, you don’t have a lot of time to move your side business forward.
But if you can find some time – maybe even 30 minutes – every single day to create something that moves your dreams forward…
You’ll find that you can get there faster than you imagined.
Tip #6: Do Great Work
One of the easiest ways to stand out in today’s world is to:
#1: Do what you say you’re going to do, and
#2: Do great work!
The simple truth is that most people aren’t going to do these 2 things.
So if all you do is your best, every single time, and you stick to your word… you’re going to do big things.
Tip #7: Focus on Execution Over Perfection
Let’s say you’re planning a trip to get from San Diego, CA (my home), to Las Vegas, NV for a weekend of fun.
You want a smooth and fast ride, so you develop a plan to wait until every single traffic light is lined up green.
If you never hit a red light and there’s no traffic, your trip will be perfect!
Except guess what…
Unless you have a hacker working from home like you’re in The Italian Job movie – changing all the lights for you – it’s never going to happen.
So many aspiring entrepreneurs I see become perpetual planners…
They try to plan, wait, and develop their products until they’re absolutely perfect.
A year later, they have 75% of an amazing course… but no proof that anyone will actually buy it!
To me, it’s all about execution over perfection.
Take action everyday, before it’s perfect. Get feedback from the market and adjust quickly.
These tips will help you move forward faster towards your goal when you apply them.
Thanks for reading – there’s a lot more where this came from.
